Palacio Canto del Pico is a unique and quite remarkable property. It was built on the orders of the Earl of Las Almenas, whose personal project it was and the building work was carried out by local master masons between 1920 and 1922. It is rumoured that the aristocrat chose the location for medical reasons, as it was believed that the property had strong concentrations of ultra violet rays, which were supposedly extremely beneficial to health. The palace was declared a Monument of Artistic and Historical Importance by King Alfonso XIII of Spain in 1930 (it has since been down-graded to a Building of Cultural Interest) and has seen many famous historical personalities walk through its corridors. The statesman Antonio Maura (1853-1925), who lived in a nearby mansion, died at the palace during one of his visits. He collapsed suddenly while he was descending a flight of stairs in the palace. A commemorative plaque in his memory and marking the spot reads: “Descending these stairs Mr Antonio Maura ascended to heaven”. During the Spanish Civil War, the Canto del Pico was the headquarters of the Republican Military Command and served as barracks for Indalecio Prieto (1883-1962) and General Miaja (1878-1958), both whom directed the Battle of Brunete from there. On the death of the Earl of Las Almenas and, as a result of a 1937 holographic will, the palace became the property of General Francisco Franco (1892-1975), who owned it for thirty five years. He used it as a safe house on the occasions when the regime's intelligence services warned of threats to his life. He also went to the property for leisure weekends and was known to have a farm there with sheep, chickens and bee hives. His access was via a direct road which was linked to his official residence in the Pardo Palace. After Franco's death, the property passed down to his family, who sold it to the present owners in 1988. The palace was named Canto del Pico, which translates as “Song from the Beak” because it stands close to a huge granite rock which resembles the beak of a bird. The mountain on which it stands also goes by the same name. The palace does not have any particular architectural style, although there are certain modernist touches. It was constructed as a home-museum, to preserve the Earl's vast collection of artistic and archaeological treasures, many of which were integrated into the structure. The building housed architectural and decorative elements representing Spanish art of the 12th to17th centuries. Notable amongst these are the Gothic capitals from the Castle of Curiel, original doors from the Convent of Salesas, ceilings of highly detailed carpentry from Curiel de Duero, Toledo and Teruel and different ornamental motifs from the Collegiate Church of Logrono and the Seo de Urgel. The palace has a total floor area of 3000 square metres (32, 293 square feet), has approximately 20 rooms and was built on three floors, the individual floor areas being as follows: Ground Floor: 750 square metres (8073 square feet) First Floor: 1125 square metres (12, 110 square feet) Second Floor: 1125 square metres (12, 110 square feet) The palace was built above a granite boulder, which had to be blown up to make room for the ground floor. It was constructed in granite masonry, while frames, cornices and ceilings were made from wood and the roof was finished with curved tiles, which have since been replaced with slates. The building's facade opens on to the picturesque scenery which surrounds it, with the aid of balconies and look-out sites. The unusual features include, in true Flamenco style, a large metallic crown, details which are repeated in the entrance, over the main door and in the west wing. The walls of the building also incorporate a number of important pieces of Spanish heritage, in addition to those already mentioned above, such as the balconies, gothic figures, an example being that of the Virgin Mary, a window from the Cathedral of Palencia, stone railings and balustrades, Romanesque arches, gothic windows, important shields, battlements, machicolations and numerous columns. If the exterior is an amalgamation of different elements of no specific style, the interior corresponds to a type of decoration which prevailed at the turn of the century in certain cultural circles of Spain. This is made clear on entering the hallway, where a row of octagonal columns, presumably from the Castle of Curiel, stand on a floor of polished rock, large oval arches prevail and there is simple panelling throughout. Without doubt, the first floor lounge is, along with the chapel, the most outstanding feature of the interior. It is reached by ascending stairs, decorated with antique Talaverian tiles and more modern ones by Ruiz de Luna, which lead to the lobby with a fireplace and an impressive polychrome wooden lintel. The lobby leads to the main hall, which has sixteen columns supporting ten lowered Corinthian arches of great interest along the edge, apparently from Lleida from the XVI century. The chapel, two stories high with a square floor, is covered in oval arches, again in polychrome, and the finishing touches are a large Gothic multi-foil arch and two windows in the same style. The remaining rooms of the palace are similarly decorated, examples being the library, which has a Gothic chimney and four columns from Toledo of the same style, or the coffered ceilings in the dining room. A villa, A cottage, stables, tennis & swimming pool Within the grounds are two other residential buildings, as follows; Villa Pena Bermeja: Ground Floor …… 260 square metres (2799 square feet) First Floor ………… 260 square metres (2799 square feet) Attic ………………… 100 square metres (1076 square feet) Total floor area 620 square metres (6674 square feet) Villa del Guarda (Keeper's Cottage): Ground Floor …… 110 square metres (1184 square feet) First Floor ………… 70 square metres (753 square feet) Total floor area 180 square metres (1937 square feet) The Stables have a floor area of 300 square metres (3229 square feet). There is a tennis court of 800 square metres (957 square yards) and an outdoor swimming pool. At 1011 metres above sea level, the palace is situated at the highest point of the municipality of Torrelodones on a granite mass, from where there are spectacular panoramic views over the surrounding countryside and from where it is possible to pinpoint 34 towns in the province. The city of Madrid, in all its splendour, is silhouetted against the skyline, creating a truly outstanding aspect. The granite mountain, also called Canto del Pico, geologically belongs to the Sierra del Hoyo, a mountainous island in the Sierra de Guadarrama. The Estate of 104.5 hectares has a perimeter of 9 kilometres and is full of trees and shrubs which are characteristic of Mediterranean vegetation, particularly prominent being the Holm Oak and the Alcornoque. The location has a fairly ragged relief with the creek of La Torre on its west side, this being a tributary of the Guadarrama River. In 1985, the Estate was incorporated within the Regional Park of the Cuenca de Manzanares. The estate is accessible from the north west motorway (a-6 Madrid-La Coruna) at exit point 29, from where there is access to the m-618 road, which borders the east side of the estate. Madrid is just 30 kilometres away. Taking the a-6 motorway and the m-30 and m-40 motorways which circle Madrid, the Estate is within easy reach of Madrid's International Airport, Barajas, which is located 45 kilometres away. Madrid's central train station, Chamartin, is 40 kilometres away. In 1991, the Spanish government granted permission for the palace and the other buildings on the property to be rehabilitated and re-modelled, with the object of converting the Estate into a luxury hotel. That permission is still valid and includes the use of the main building with up to 20 rooms forming the public rooms and administration of the hotel, bars and restaurants, new buildings providing about 40 guest bedrooms, conference rooms, swimming pool and parking. It will be necessary to have the planning consent and building licence amended as necessary, updated and approved by the local authorities. The existing planning documents will be made available to genuine prospective buyers, only after a Non Disclosure Agreement has been signed. The Agents, Investabroad Properties, believe that other uses for the Estate may be possible, such as a corporate headquarters, hospital and medical centre or sport and leisure complex. Another possibility may be the conversion of the palace into luxury apartments. They stress, however, that no enquiries whatsoever have been made to the authorities regarding these suggestions and it will be the responsibility of any intending buyers to make their own enquiries. Finally, it should not be overlooked that the palace and other buildings can also be rehabilitated into private residences, as they were when used by Franco and his family. Such use is equally ideal when considering the private, privileged and secure location of the site. 1.
